When I started looking for the best donut store in every county, I didn’t expect to find so many places with vegan donuts.
I was probably thinking that it would take egg, butter or cream to create various pastas, frostings and toppings. Vegan donuts are said to be a rarity – an exciting find among a mass of animal by-products.
Not so. Turns out, vegan donuts are a lot more popular than I could have imagined.
Places like The LoDG – short for The Law of Donutgineering – which opened in Jersey City in March 2020, offered vegan donuts from the jump.
“It was important for us to be inclusive,” said co-owner Eddie Alfonso. “We live in an age where people have a variety of different dietary needs. We really need to make our food accessible to everyone.
Here are a few bakeries across the state that offer vegan donuts.
Bashful Banana Bakery & Café, Ocean City
At Bashful Banana Bakery, you can get your fix of vegan treats while strolling the Ocean City Boardwalk. Although the bakery makes small treats from scratch daily, be sure to call ahead to see if they have any donuts that day, as that is not a consistent menu item.

Broad Street Dough Co., Freehold & Oakhurst
Vegan or not, Broad Street Dough Co. is one of the best donut stores in the state. I know, I ate a lot of donuts last month. It’s also incredibly inclusive. Dozens of its donuts (made hot and fresh in front of your eyes) can be vegan, dairy-free, and gluten-free. They are also kosher and can adapt to nut allergies.
