Romain Perraud: Southampton completes transfer of left-back Brest
What was said?
Ralph Hasenhuttl said: “This is an important first signing for us. Clearly, the left-back is an area in which we were looking to strengthen ourselves and we have been following Romain for a long time because he fits our profile very well for this position.
“He’s a tough and energetic guy with good aggression who will bring a lot of energy to our game. He has good quality with his wide delivery and is very competitive with his defense.
“Completing the transfer before the start of the preseason allows him to immediately start training with us, to learn our way of playing and our tactical behaviors. I think Romain will fit in well with us and we can l ” help develop their game further and maximize their potential.
Perraud added: “I am very happy to be a Saint and I can’t wait to start this adventure.
“I think it’s the best club for me. The manager explained the club’s project to me and for me it is very important.
“He told me about tactics, how to play, and there are similarities between his game and mine. It felt very good, so now I’m here and I’m very happy.
What will Perraud bring to Southampton?
First, Perraud will fill the gap at left-back left vacant by the late Ryan Bertrand. The England international has left Southampton when his contract expires, and it is understood that he is close to making a deal with Leicester City.
Perraud was in good shape for Brest last season, scoring three goals and registering seven assists. Indeed, no defender has collected more assists in Ligue 1 last season than Perraud.
Despite being nominally a defender, Perraud’s presence is often felt higher up the pitch – he registers heavily for shots, assists and 90-shot creation actions (fbref).
What has Perraud accomplished in his career so far?
A product of the Nice academy, Perraud only made three appearances for the Côte d’Azur before joining Paris FC’s Ligue 2 team on loan during the 2018-19 campaign.
This led to a permanent move to Brest, newly promoted to Ligue 1 in the 2019-20 season.
Perraud made 20 league appearances in his debut season with his new club, before making 36 in 2020-21.
